1998 is the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A perfect opportunity to learn more about human rights - and this UN Site is the perfect place to start.
Human rights violators, torturers and killers most often walk free, without having to pay for their crimes. National governments are often unable or unwilling to prosecute them. For years, human rights advocates have been working for the creation of an International Criminal Court, where those responsible for crimes against humanity could be tried. While the creation of a Court is now almost a reality, its scope and its independence are very much at issue. You can find information on the ICC at the web sites here. Please also sign this petition for an independent prosecutor. |

The UN has a huge (and hugely under-funded) human rights machinery. Its different bodies produce a variety of reports, declarations and recommendations. While the UN can be rather conservative, it's a great place to start any research on human rights - and the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights probably has what you are looking for.
