Independent Society "Human Rights in Georgia"

The Independent Society "Human Rights in Georgia" is a new organization working to protect and promote human rights in the Republic of Georgia. Among its priorities are the abolition of the death penalty, obtaining fair trials for political prisoners, and eliminating ill-treatment and torture.

The Society lays special emphasis on the establishment and the advancement of human rights teaching at schools and the promotion of human rights education in the country. Unfortunately human rights and civic education is not among the priorities of Georgian education system and little work is being done by NGOs on this subject. At the first stage the teachers' training mechanism should be established. There is urgent need in preparation of manuals for teachers and for pupils as well as the programs for training courses.

For that reason, the Society is working on the development of audiovisual human rights materials, which will serve the increasing of attention and sensitization of public opinion on all matters affecting human rights, rule of law, conflict resolution, peace and development of democratic institutions.

The society is working on the first issue of its journal "Human Rights in Georgia". The journal will serve an analytical/educational function.

In addition, the Society is assembling a basic human rights reference library: Once a minimum collection is available, the library will be opened for human rights activist, researchers, teachers, students, school pupils and for wide range of individuals. Donations of human rights materials from other organizations and institutions are welcomed.
